How Sentinel-2 Cells Differ from Landsat 8 Cells
Sentinel-2 imagery cells differ from Landsat. While Landsat cells change shape towards the poles (to deal with the decreasing distance between lines of longitude towards the poles), Sentinel-2 keeps the same shape of cells but increases the amount of overlap, or has only partial imagery within a cell. This creates a Sentinel-2 Path/Row naming convention that is impractical to apply for GIS Ag Maps download purposes (unlike with Landsat 8, where actual Landsat 8 Path/Row values can be used). GIS Ag Maps has instead developed a simple grid for each state to download Sentinel-2 imagery. One of the differences between Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 file names are that Sentinel-2 has a state abbreviation in the name (which is necessary because different state have the same grid coordinates). Landsat 8 actual Path/Row values are used and do not repeat within states or the world; this is an advantage because a Landsat 8 image that crosses into multiple states can be added as a download to the different states without any modification to the file name.
