How to Add the County and States Shapefiles to QGIS Map Project
The County and State Boundaries folder contains US county and state shapefiles; though they represent the entire country, they are lightweight layers and can be easily used and added to the crop imagery map project in QGIS to help spatially orient you. After downloading the folder, extract/decompress it (free extraction softwar can be downloaded on this website). Importantly, you should add the shapefile layers after you have opened the QGIS Map Project (otherwise the raster pixels will be distorted and not square due to the different projection of the County and State layer; open the saved map project by clicking Project then navigate to the saved project and click Open). To add the layers in QGIS, click Layer (top menu), Add Layer, then Vector - navigate to the .shp file then click Open and Add. Both layers will open with a fill you will want to make transparent with the boundary visible. To do this, right-click on layer (in Layers window), then select Properties, then Symbology, then click Simple Fill, then click Fill Color, and select Transparent Fill. You can also change the stroke (outline) width and color in the same window.
