(Outline to Use SLFMI Raster to Assess Live Fuel Moisture in Shrubs)
Download or request Sentinel-2 Live Fuel Moisture Index (SLFMI) rasters to assess wild shrub vegetation moisture percent for wildfire danger assessment. The index values are based on an algorithm developed and analyzed by GIS Ag Maps and are correlated to US Forest Service Wildfire Assessment System (USFS-WFAS; offsite page that opens in new tab) live fuel moisture (LFM) measurements. An advantage of using Sentinel-2 to assess LFM is that it has a 5-day revisit time (clouds can impede imagery, of course), which can result in more LFM data than USFS measurements. For the sites and time frames (May 1st or LFM 120 to mid fall) analyzed when developing SLFMI, the average and median correlations to USFS-WFAS LFM values are about =0.9 when including single and combined seasons, and well over R²= 0.9 when just correlating single seasons (both extremely statistically significant). Access the following link for information and statistics about S2LFMI: Sentinel-2 Live Fuel Moisture Index (SLFMI) Information and Statistics.
