Landsat 8 & Sentinel-2 Atmospheric Correction Relative Scatter (Embedded Excel) Calculator & Lookup Table

Landsat surface reflectance (SR) can be ordered for free from the USGS; a free downloadable toolkit can be used to convert Sentinel-2 to SR. The calculator and lookup table below are for converting to SR independently (as explained in tutorials and courses) - please read: Background information about USGS & GIS Ag Maps surface reflectance.

 

CALCULATOR MAY TAKE A FEW MOMENTS TO LOAD - IT IS CLOUD-BASED. IF IT IS DOWN, USE LOOKUP TABLE BELOW IT.

ENTER BAND 4 (RED) STARTING SCATTER THEN PRESS ENTER OR USE LOOKUP TABLE BELOW IF USING A DIFFERENT STARTING BAND. (Landsat 8 & Sentinel-2 have different relative scatter for the same band 4 starting scatter because they have different band center wavenlengths.)

L8 is Landsat 8; S2 is Sentinel-2; BCW is band center wavelength in micrometers; B is band (L8 BCW is listed on this NASA offsite page; S2 BCW is the average of Sentinel-2A & 2B, which are available in the metadata file in the download folder (BCW values are very similar between the two; the values in the calculator or table below can be used for both). Red Font is where band 4 (red band) starting reflectance scatter is entered. Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 have different band 4 (red band) BCW and therefore have different scatter value relative to the same band 4 starting value (see Lookup Table below for relative scatter across Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 bands). Generally for both, starting values should be from .012 to .04 (or very near those limits). The Calculator's relative scatter values have a power line correlation with band center wavelength of R² = 1.0 (the proper theoretical relationship) and the power exponents increase as scatter increases, as they should.

Using the Relative Scatter Calculator

Simply enter Band 4 Starting Reflectance Scatter to Calculate Relative Scatter for Other Bands. You can just copy a single value but a recommended way to use the Calculator is to: 1) Enter the band 4 starting scatter reflectance value, 2) After the relative scatter is calculated, shade in the all Band, BCW, and scatter values (three rows, including band 4), then hold CTRL and press C to Copy, 3) Use CNTRL V to paste the values into an Excel (or other) spreadsheet, 4) If you would like to plot the data, shade the BCW and scatter values in Excel and insert a scatter chart, 5) Right-click on a point in the scatter chart and add a power trendline, 6) Format trendline and display an equation of chart to find the power exponent. You can also display R² value on chart, 7) Double-click a green cell or the open area to right of Landsat 8 calculator to make the cells stop highlighting. You can add another value at this point.

The Calculator's relative scatter values have a power correlation with band center wavelength of R² = 1.0 (the proper theoretical relationship) and the power exponents increase as scatter increases, as they should. The values are based on research here and information Chavez (1988); Chavez (1988) first suggested a Continuous Relative Scatter Table.

Landsat 8 B4 0.018 has power exponent of -4.0 (corresponds to a very clear atmosphere [Chavez, 1988]; scatter can be less than this, however). L8 B4 0.0350, the power is -2.7 (-2.0 corresponds to a clear atmosphere [Chavez, 1988]). Very clear values can be somewhat lower than -4.0 based on our research here.

Sentinel-2 B4 0.0165 has power exponent of -4.0.

Important: Sentinel-2 Level 1C imagery pixel values represent TOA reflectance that has been converted to integer rasters by essentially multiplying TOA decimal values by 10,000 - so you either need to covert the rasters to reflectance units by dividing by 10,000 or multiply the scatter values below by 10,000 before applying.
